Bilingual Sounds, a proud part of The SoCal Sound, welcomed Cuban-Canadian multi-Latin Grammy and Grammy Award-winning artist Alex Cuba for an exclusive live in studio session! Hosted by Bilingual Sounds’ program director Byron Gonzalez.
You can listen to Bilingual Sounds locally in Southern California on 88.5 HD3, stream online, or through the free SoCal Sound App! Available for apple and android devices!
Alex Cuba began the interview by reflecting on his musical roots, Cuba recounted how he first picked up Cuban percussion instruments at the age of four, later transitioning to guitar and then bass. His early exposure to music set the foundation for his signature style, he explains that his sound is “not what we would call traditional” when referring to the Cuban sounds with contemporary global influences. It was not until Cuba performed in Canada that he knew that singing was right for him, when he would perform and he “had people crying around [him] without understanding the language”
A key moment in the interview came when Cuba spoke about his experience as an immigrant and the importance of embracing one’s adopted home. “If you’re coming into a country, it’s never going to be like the one you left behind,” he shared. “You don’t have to look for it; instead, open yourself up to new experiences and start adding to your mind, expanding your world.” These words set a reminder to not only enjoy where you might be located, but also appreciate the beauty of cultural exchange, especially the role that music plays in bridging divides.
